Walailak University Announces Policy to Promote Gender Equality and Prevent Discrimination

On 4 October 2024, Walailak University (WU) officially announced the implementation of its Policy on Gender Equality, Non-discrimination, and Anti-harassment, B.E. 2567 (2024). The policy marks a significant step in strengthening WU’s institutional commitment to equality, inclusivity, and human rights within its educational and professional communities.

The newly issued policy aims to eliminate all forms of discrimination and harassment, particularly against women and transgender individuals, while ensuring fair access and participation in all aspects of university life—from applications and admissions to employment and advancement opportunities. It also establishes protective measures for individuals who report cases of discrimination or harassment, ensuring they are free from any form of retaliation or disadvantage in their education or employment.

This initiative reflects WU’s broader vision of cultivating a safe, respectful, and supportive learning and working environment that upholds human dignity and equal opportunity for all. The policy explicitly prohibits discrimination based on race, nationality, ethnicity, skin color, family background, religion, social or economic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental condition, spoken language, political belief, or marital and parental status.

In addition to policy enforcement, Walailak University plans to implement awareness and capacity-building programs, such as training sessions, campaigns, and workshops, to educate staff and students on issues related to gender sensitivity, equity, and respectful communication. These efforts will help foster a culture of empathy, understanding, and mutual respect across the university community.

Through this progressive policy, Walailak University reaffirms its dedication to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10: Reduced Inequalities, and contributes to promoting SDG 5: Gender Equality by ensuring that everyone—regardless of gender or background—has the opportunity to thrive in an inclusive academic environment.
