Walailak University Issues New Regulations on Employee Leave to Foster Family-Friendly Work Environment

On 9 April 2025, Walailak University officially issued the “Walailak University’s Regulations on Leaves of Employee, B.E. 2568 (2025)”, introducing significant updates to maternity and paternity leave provisions. These revisions reflect the University’s commitment to creating a supportive and family-friendly workplace, recognizing the importance of work–life balance for staff members welcoming new children into their families.

Key Provisions of Maternity Leave

  1. Eligibility and Entitlement
    All staff and temporary employees are entitled to a maximum of 98 days of paid maternity leave, which may be taken before and after childbirth as suited to the individual’s circumstances.
  2. Adjustment of Maternity Leave
    Employees who have not yet delivered as scheduled may request to cancel the remaining portion of their approved maternity leave, subject to approval from their immediate supervisor. Any leave days already taken prior to the cancellation shall be counted as personal leave.
  3. Extended Leave for Childcare
    Upon completion of the maternity leave period, employees may apply for up to 150 additional working days of unpaid personal leave to care for their newborn. Such requests must be submitted to and approved by the employee’s supervisor.
  4. Application Process
    All maternity leave and extension requests must be formally submitted in accordance with university procedures and approved prior to commencement.

Key Provisions of Paternity Leave

  1. Eligibility and Application
    Staff and temporary employees seeking to assist their legally married spouse following childbirth may apply for paternity leave by submitting a request to their immediate supervisor for approval.
  2. Leave Period
    The application must be submitted before or on the day of leave and must fall within 98 days from the date of childbirth.
  3. Entitlement
    Eligible employees are entitled to a maximum of 15 consecutive working days of fully paid paternity leave.
  4. Approval Authority
    The President of Walailak University, or an authorized representative, retains the authority to approve paternity leave requests.
  5. Supporting Documentation
    Applications must be accompanied by relevant supporting documents, such as the marriage certificate and child’s birth certificate, to ensure a smooth approval process.
