Walailak University Strengthens Gender Equality Through Graduation Support for Female Students

On 4 October 2024, Walailak University has reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality, issuing the Gender Equality, Non-discrimination, and Anti-harassment Policy, B.E. 2567 (2024) to ensure that women, men, and LGBTQ+ individuals can study and work in a safe, inclusive environment free from discrimination.

A key focus of the university’s policy is monitoring and supporting female students to ensure equal academic outcomes. The Center for Educational Services (CES) leads efforts to measure and track female students’ graduation likelihood compared to their male peers. The CES, through its Registration Division, collects and analyzes enrollment and graduation data, supported by two dedicated information systems: the WUIQE Website, which publishes data on female students and graduates, and the CES Database Website, which tracks current enrollment trends across all faculties.

“These systems provide transparency and allow us to identify any gaps in graduation rates between female and male students,” said CES officials. “By tracking trends over the years, we can implement targeted support programs to ensure all students have equal opportunities to succeed.”

To address potential barriers to graduation, the Division of Student Support and Development collaborates with the CES to implement programs aimed at improving academic performance, personal development, and overall well-being for female students. Initiatives include:

  • WU Tutor Center: Provides personalized academic tutoring and mentoring for over 1,500 female students annually, helping them overcome academic challenges and boost graduation rates.
  • Smile and Smart Center: Offers life mentoring, counseling, and mental health support to help students manage stress, personal challenges, and university life.
  • Faculty-Student Mentorship Initiative: Pairs female students with faculty mentors, offering early-stage guidance and problem-solving support.
  • Scholarship Services: Awards financial support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including Thai, displaced Burmese, and ASEAN students, enabling 980 female students to continue their studies without financial barriers in 2024.

Walailak University also requires students considering withdrawal to consult faculty advisors, ensuring underlying challenges are addressed and students are encouraged to continue their studies.

By combining rigorous data tracking with comprehensive academic and personal support, Walailak University is actively narrowing the graduation gap for female students, fostering an equitable and inclusive learning environment that empowers all students to reach their full potential.
