On 12 March 2024, the Center for Cultural and Sports Promotion, Walailak University, organized the annual Tumpang Archaeological Site Merit-Making Ceremony 2024 at the Tumpang Archaeological Site, Walailak University. The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, Acting President of Walailak University, and attended by administrators, faculty members, staff, and students. The ceremony aimed to encourage students and personnel to recognize the value of cultural heritage and long-standing Thai beliefs, as well as to pay respect to the sacred entity of the university for prosperity and good fortune.
The Tumpang Archaeological Site is regarded as a sacred place by the local people of Tha Sala District, who believe that it is protected by a spirit known as Luang Pu Tumpang, appearing in the form of a white king cobra that guards the site from harm. It is said that those who attempt to steal artifacts from the site will be unable to find their way out, or if they manage to take something, misfortunes will follow until the item is returned and an apology is made to the guardian spirit. Today, people continue to visit the site to worship and make offerings, praying for blessings and success. When their wishes are fulfilled, they return to fulfill their vows in gratitude.
The Tumpang Archaeological Site has served as a building and monument of cultural significance on campus, with free access to students, staff, and the general public.
