THA SALA, NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 17–18 August 2026 — Walailak University, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Warit Jawjit, Vice President, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laksanara Khwanchum, Deputy Director of the Center for Academic Services (CAS), and CAS staff, participated in the second Sustainable University Network Thailand (SUN Thailand) meeting of 2026, hosted by Phuket Rajabhat University.
The meeting provided an opportunity for participants to exchange knowledge and experiences on advancing universities towards sustainability while strengthening the role of higher education institutions in the sustainable development of society, the environment, and local communities.
The event featured an opening ceremony, a presentation on provincial sustainability policies, and an introduction to the background and development of the SUN Thailand network.
A key highlight was the panel discussion, “Best Practices from Thailand’s Top Impact & UI Ranked Universities,” which provided a platform for leading Thai universities to share their experiences and best practices related to the THE Sustainability Impact Rankings and the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. Representatives from Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, Siam University, Walailak University, and Thammasat University participated in the discussion. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Warit Jawjit represented Walailak University in presenting the University’s sustainability initiatives and practices.
The meeting also included breakout activities. Members of the network committee attended a SUN Thailand network meeting, while other participants joined knowledge-sharing sessions and discussions on marine waste management, marine waste valorization, and the development of innovative products from marine waste. Participants also visited community product booths showcasing products whose development had been supported by Phuket Rajabhat University.
On 18 August 2026, participants took part in a study visit and knowledge-sharing activities focusing on sustainable management in the tourism sector. They also explored Phuket’s local food culture, which reflects the province’s identity and way of life, as well as its role as a major tourism destination where economic development, culture, and sustainability are closely interconnected.
In addition, participants visited the Phuket Mining Museum to learn about the history of the province’s mining industry. The museum preserves and presents the story of Phuket’s prosperous tin-mining era, which once formed an important foundation of the province’s economy and continues to reflect the historical, social, and economic development of the region.
