MUEANG, NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 7 August 2026 — Walailak University (WU), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onanong Cheablam, lecturer and researcher from the School of Management, conducted a field study to explore potential routes for developing Low-Carbon Tourism. The initiative aims to enhance the capacity and standards of low-carbon tourism in coastal communities in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province under the Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration for Sustainable Water Resource Utilization Project. The field study was conducted at the Pak Phaya Blue Swimming Crab Bank.
The field study focused on developing low-carbon tourism routes and activities within coastal communities by integrating educational programs and sustainability-focused activities related to fisheries management, aquaculture, and tourism. The initiative builds upon existing community-based and way-of-life tourism and connects it with low-carbon tourism, enhancing the capacity of coastal communities to manage environmentally friendly tourism that minimizes carbon emissions and environmental impacts.
The approach integrates nature-based tourism, ecotourism, creative tourism, and responsible tourism. Key practices include the use of solar-powered boats to reduce energy consumption, waste reduction, and the promotion of local cuisine that reflects community identity. Conservation-oriented activities include mangrove restoration, coastal clean-up activities, and nature study trails, while promoting the efficient use of natural resources and raising awareness of the sustainable conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14: Life Below Water, which promotes the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources; SDG 13: Climate Action, which calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, which emphasizes collaboration among relevant networks and organizations to advance sustainable development.
