THA SALA, NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 3 September 2026 — Walailak University, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laksanara Khwanchum and Asst. Prof. Dr. Chuthamat Rattikansukha, lecturers and researchers from the School of Languages and General Education, together with Asst. Prof. Dr. Kamon Thinsurat, lecturer and researcher from the School of Engineering and Technology, visited the Ban Leam Homestay Community to review the outcomes of the project and transfer knowledge from the university to the community on climate change, environmental conservation, and renewable energy under the project “Green University for Ban Leam Homestay Community-Based Tourism Enterprise, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.”
The project comprises three key initiatives:
This project applies knowledge of renewable energy and electrical engineering to design and analyse a solar photovoltaic power generation system for the village water supply system. The initiative aims to promote the use of clean energy, reduce dependence on electricity from the grid, and improve energy efficiency in the community’s public utility infrastructure. It also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening the community’s response to climate change.
This activity was conducted as part of the 2026 Community Development Volunteer Camp for Sustainability. It aims to build knowledge, awareness, and participation among community members, young people, and university students in the areas of clean energy use, energy conservation, and environmental protection.
The campaign includes activities encouraging households and local businesses to reduce electricity consumption and energy costs. Incentives are also provided through awards for participants who achieve the specified electricity reduction targets. The initiative seeks to encourage sustained changes in energy-use behaviour and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the community level.
This project promotes learning about climate change and sustainable agriculture by encouraging the community to make effective use of locally available resources and waste materials. Vegetable-growing soil is developed from fermented fish liquid and mangrove sediment, alongside knowledge transfer on sustainable agriculture, efficient resource use, waste reduction, and adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
In addition to reviewing the project outcomes, the activity aimed to expand knowledge transfer from the university to community members, children, and young people. The activities focused on developing an understanding of the causes and impacts of climate change, as well as the roles of renewable energy, energy conservation, and efficient resource use in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Community members and students were given opportunities to learn through demonstrations, knowledge exchange, and hands-on activities.
During the activity, the project team and students from the Electrical Engineering programme demonstrated and shared knowledge about solar photovoltaic (Solar PV) power generation systems, covering the basic operating principles of solar panels, the generation and utilisation of clean energy, and practical approaches to energy conservation in daily life. The team also promoted and invited participants to join the campaign to reduce electricity consumption and electricity bills, encouraging more efficient energy-use behaviours.
Members of the Ban Leam Homestay Community, as well as students and teachers from Wat Sao Thong Thong Municipal School, participated in the activities and exchanged knowledge and experiences.
The initiative reflects Walailak University’s role in integrating education, research, academic services, and social engagement to apply knowledge and innovation to address real-world challenges and support area-based development. It contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4: Quality Education, through learning opportunities for children, young people, university students, and community members; SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, through the promotion of solar energy and energy efficiency; SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, through efficient resource utilisation and the reuse of waste materials; SDG 13: Climate Action, through climate change awareness and activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration among the university, community, educational institutions, lecturers, students, and local partners.
The initiative also supports Walailak University’s efforts under the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings, particularly the Energy and Climate Change and Education and Research (ED) categories. This includes transferring and extending knowledge on sustainability, climate change, clean energy, and responsible resource use to the wider community, while providing students with opportunities to gain practical experience and participate in addressing environmental challenges in collaboration with local communities.
