Walailak University implemented a livelihood promotion project to support sustainable community development through an activity focused on developing and testing the effectiveness of a soil conditioner produced from biogas sludge generated by a pig farm. The activity was led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Nirattisai Rakmak and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gampanart Sukmak, in collaboration with the Local Pig Farming Enterprise Group of Satit Walailak Pattana Community.
The activity aimed to develop methods for managing and utilising sludge generated from the pig farm’s biogas system by converting it into a soil conditioner. This approach adds value to residual materials and promotes the appropriate reuse of resources for agricultural purposes. Members of the community enterprise group participated in learning about sludge management and processing, while volunteer members took part in planting vegetable crops from July to August to test the effectiveness of the soil conditioner at different application rates. Physical plant growth data were collected to evaluate the results alongside laboratory analyses of the nutrient composition of the soil conditioner.
At the same time, the activity was integrated into courses offered by the Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Chemistry programmes at the School of Engineering and Technology. This integration connected classroom knowledge with practical, community-based work, providing students with opportunities to learn from real-world situations, practise data analysis and experimental processes, and develop experience in working collaboratively with the community.
