Walailak University Proposing the GI Registration for the Krabi Hom Hua Bon Upland Rice

MUEANG, KRABI, 5 February 2024 – Walailak University, represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onanong Cheablam, and the staff from the Center for Academic Services held a meeting on the potentiality of GI registration for the Krabi Hom Hua Bon Upland Rice. Participating in the meeting were representatives from the Department of Intellectual Property, the Krabi Provincial Agricultural and Cooperatives Office, the Office of Provincial Commercial Affairs, Krabi, and the Provincial Community Development Office of Krabi, as well as agriculturists and entrepreneurs. During the meeting, the participants provided insights and information to Walailak University and collaboratively discussed strategies to receive geographical indication (GI) registration for the product.

Following the meeting, on February 6, 2024, the WU team and representatives from the Department of Intellectual Property visited rice fields and held a meeting with rice farmers to gather data on various matters, including the production process, the size of rice fields, productive capacity, the number of rice farmers, and so on. This initiative has been conducted to meet the commitments of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 2: Zero Hunger, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
