CAS Team Conducts Water Sampling at Koh Thuat Municipality to Investigate Water Quality Concerns

11 March 2025 – Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand

A team from the Center for Academic Services has conducted an on-site investigation into water quality concerns at the Koh Thuat Subdistrict Municipality in Pak Phanang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, following reports from local residents of unpleasant odours in tap and raw water supplies.

The initiative was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laksanara Khwanchum, Deputy Director of the Center for Academic Services at Walailak University. The team responded to a formal request from the municipality to investigate the issue, which has raised concerns among the local population.

The visit focused on collecting samples from the municipality’s raw water sources and tap water system at the local waterworks. The samples will be analysed in laboratory conditions for both chemical and biological contaminants. Investigators also examined the waterwork infrastructure to determine the root causes of the odour and identify potential solutions.

The mission aims to improve the quality of water supplied to the community and restore public confidence in its safety. Results of the analysis will be compiled into a detailed report, which will include recommendations for enhancing the water treatment process and suggestions for raising public awareness on the efficient and sustainable use of water resources.

This activity forms part of the university’s broader mission to support local communities in managing natural resources sustainably. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as well as the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings framework that promotes environmentally friendly practices in higher education institutions.
