Walailak University Brings Ramakien to Life in Two Spectacular Khon Shows

On August 15, 2025, Walailak University organized a Khon performance titled “Ram Raj Suriya Wong” to celebrate the birthdays of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn and Her Majesty the Queen Mother. The event was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, along with university executives, faculty members, and over 1,400 students and visitors from Nakhon Si Thammarat Province at the Main Auditorium, Thaiburi Building, Walailak University.

This Ramakien Khon performance depicted the episode “Raj Suriya Wong”, which tells the story of Nang Sammanakha, who was rejected by Rama and punished by Lakshman, leading her to report to Thotsakan and sparking a war. During the conflict, Nang Sida was abducted but remained loyal to Rama. After the war, she proved her pure love by undergoing a fire ordeal, eventually reuniting happily with Rama.

The Walailak Khon performance was held in two sessions:

  • 1:00 PM – attended by local students and educators from Nakhon Si Thammarat, with over 1,300 attendees.
  • 7:00 PM – attended by university executives, staff, students, and the general public, with more than 1,400 attendees.
This forms part of Walailak University’s initiative to contribute to recording and preserving local, regional, and national intangible cultural heritage, in support of the SDGs, particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
