15 May 2024, Nakhon Si Thammarat — Walailak University has officially launched its Action Plan for Reducing Single-Use Plastics and Minimizing Landfill Waste as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and green campus development. Issued on 15 May 2024, the plan sets out a clear framework to significantly reduce plastic waste generation across the university, particularly targeting single-use plastic items such as bags, bottles, and tubes.
The action plan focuses on both behavioral change and policy implementation to encourage the university community to embrace sustainable practices. Under the Awareness and Behavioral Change Campaign, students, staff, and surrounding communities are encouraged to cultivate discipline in reducing the use of single-use plastics through continuous education and outreach activities.
A major component of the plan is the Guidelines on Single-Use Plastics (2023), which require all campus shops and stores to replace handled plastic bags with 100% recycled or biodegradable alternatives. This initiative ensures that all vendors operating within the university align with Walailak University’s sustainability standards.
The Reusable Containers Program also plays a key role in promoting eco-friendly behavior. Customers who bring their own reusable containers receive discounts at university food outlets, reinforcing the habit of reducing disposable packaging and supporting a culture of reuse.
In addition, Walailak University applies the 5S Methodology (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) within its workplaces to further minimize plastic use. The 5S system not only helps improve organization and efficiency but also ensures that environmental responsibility becomes part of everyday operations. Departments are encouraged to publicize their participation through their respective websites, amplifying the message across campus.
Complementing these efforts is the Green Dormitory Project, led by the Walailak Marine Conservation Club, which engages students in hands-on environmental activities linking marine conservation with plastic waste reduction. This initiative fosters environmental awareness and empowers students to take an active role in sustainability.
Through these comprehensive and interconnected measures, Walailak University continues to demonstrate strong leadership in sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship.
