2024 Thasala, NST Beach Cleanup by Walailak University and The Community

On June 25, 2024, Walailak University (WU) organized a large-scale beach cleanup at Bo Non Beach, Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, to address the growing issue of marine litter and coastal waste. The event was led by the Center for Academic Services (CAS) and the WU Marine Conservation Club, School of Science, in collaboration with the Marine and Coastal Resources Office 5, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), Thasala Tambon Administrative Organization, local schools, Trash Hero Thasala, Thasala Baan Rao Group, WU Tha Sung Beach Development Club, community leaders, and local volunteers.

The initiative demonstrated how cooperation between academic institutions and local communities can help preserve fragile coastal ecosystems. By involving students and residents in hands-on conservation work, the event encouraged a sense of environmental responsibility and collective stewardship. More than 250 participants joined the cleanup, working together to collect and remove 317 kilograms of marine debris, which were categorized using the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) method. The most common types of waste included foam debris, single-use plastic containers, utensils, straws, and plastic bags.

In addition to cleaning efforts, several exhibition booths were set up to provide knowledge on environmental conservation and proper waste sorting, helping to raise awareness and promote sustainable waste management practices. The event was honored by Mr. Rabill Thongnark, Director of the Nakhon Si Thammarat Marine Conservation Center, DMCR, who presented certificates of appreciation to key contributors supporting local conservation initiatives.

This beach cleanup not only removed existing waste but also strengthened public awareness of responsible waste management and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. It serves as part of Walailak University’s ongoing commitment to sustainability—reducing waste, enhancing environmental quality, promoting sustainable waste management, and empowering communities. The initiative also supports collaboration with NGOs through student volunteering, research, and educational programs, contributing directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
