NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 24–25 August 2026 — Walailak University (WU), led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, Director of the Center for Academic Services (CAS), in collaboration with the Green Globe Institute and PTT Public Company Limited, organized a knowledge-sharing forum on local wisdom and community-driven efforts to conserve and restore natural resources and ecosystems sustainably in Ban Khao Wang Community, Hin Tok Subdistrict, Ron Phibun District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.
The forum aimed to document and share the community knowledge and practices of Ban Khao Wang, which received the 17th Green Globe Award in the Community category in 2015–2016 and the 21st Green Globe Award in 2020–2021. Partner organizations participating in the event included the Forest Resource Management Office No. 12 (Nakhon Si Thammarat), Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Agricultural Extension Office, Ban Khao Wang Border Patrol Police School, the Ban Khao Wang Kravan Community Enterprise Group, Ban Khao Wang Conservation Group, Ban Khao Wang Silverware Group, and community leaders from Ban Khao Wang.
During the knowledge-sharing forum, community members presented local wisdom and livelihoods that are closely connected with the ecosystem, as well as their participation in conserving and restoring natural resources and the environment. They also discussed the community’s current situation and proposed solutions to key challenges, including water management for agriculture, diversified farming to strengthen livelihood security, food security, and ecosystem conservation.
The community also emphasized the importance of raising environmental awareness and passing down traditional agricultural knowledge, particularly the Suan Somrom mixed-orchard farming practice, as well as fostering solidarity and mutual support across generations. These efforts aim to create a healthy, resilient, and well-being-oriented community in accordance with the aspirations of its members.
The knowledge and lessons learned from Ban Khao Wang will be further utilized by the Green Globe Institute as a model for expanding community-based approaches to the conservation and restoration of natural resources and the environment in other communities.
The activity also helped strengthen community participation in conserving ecosystem biodiversity and promoting Ban Khao Wang as an important community learning site for upstream forest ecosystem conservation. The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger, which promotes food security, improved nutrition, and sustainable agriculture; SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, which promotes healthy lives and well-being for all; SDG 15: Life on Land, which focuses on protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, which emphasizes collaboration among networks and relevant organizations.
