THA SALA, NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 3 September 2026 — Walailak University (WU), led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Chuthamat Rattikansukha, researcher and lecturer from the School of Languages and General Education, together with staff from the Center of Academic Services, implemented the project “Development of Vegetable Growing Soil from Fermented Fish and Mangrove Sediment to Promote Learning on Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture” at Ban Leam Homestay Local Enterprise, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.
The project aimed to advance the concept of a Green University by transferring knowledge on the efficient use of biological resources and locally available materials, while raising awareness of climate change and sustainable environmental management. Knowledge was shared with members of the Ban Leam Homestay community enterprise, teachers, and students on how to use fish-based bio-fermented liquid fertilizer, produced from by-products and residual materials from fisheries and aquatic animal processing, together with appropriately treated mangrove sediment to develop vegetable-growing soil for household use and small-scale agricultural activities.
This approach reflects the application of the Circular Economy concept by reducing organic waste, recovering and reusing residual materials, and making efficient use of local resources. At the same time, it promotes household vegetable cultivation to strengthen food security at both household and community levels.
In addition, participants learned about Climate Change, including its impacts and risks to coastal communities, as well as approaches to mitigation and adaptation, such as reducing waste, using resources efficiently, producing food at the household level, and protecting mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves play an important role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and reducing coastal disaster risks.
The initiative is aligned with SDG 13: Climate Action and supports THE Impact Rankings SDG 13.3.1, as well as the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings under the Education and Research (ED) category, particularly in promoting environmental learning and raising awareness of sustainable environmental practices.
