WU in collaboration with the Academic Partners Organized Training and Awareness for Responsible Fisheries for Sustainability
Walailak University in cooperation with the Fisheries Office of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, networks of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and the Association of Thai Fisherfolk Federation, also with support from National Research Council of Thailand), The Agricultural Research Development Agency (Public Organization) organized training and raise awareness for responsible fisheries for Sustainability to local fishermen from 6 districts participated.
It was a course consisting of a size-catch amount of aquatic animals, not using illegal fishing equipment to achieve long-term environmental sustainability, in line with the ecosystem-based approach, to ensure that fisheries resources are maintained or restored related ecosystems in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.
After the training, fishermen have a better understanding of fisheries and ecosystems and fishermen’s joint proposal not to catch small-sized fish also the use of legal fishing equipment. Moreover, there are guidelines for declaring fishery refugia the community’s areas including a group to establish a local fishermen’s committee in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. For optimum responsible management of fishing and reduce the problem of fishing beyond the natural potential (Overfishing).
