on Tuesday, 21st December 2021, Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, Acting President of Walailak University, presided over a virtual MOU signing ceremony between Walailak University and Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ), Indonesia at Khao Luang Chamber, Cooperative Education Building, Walailak University. The MOU was strongly initiated by the Center for International Affairs and WU four key schools namely School of Nursing, School of Engineering and Technology, School of Management and School of Public Health since 25th November 2021. Prof. Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, a lecturer in the School of Science at Walailak University, has been appointed by the Department of Fisheries to be the National Scientific and Technical Committee for advising fisheries plans in Thailand, including preventing overfishing and minimizing the impact of fisheries on the aquatic ecosystems: physical, chemical, and biological alterations. He has been appointed to three national academic committees, namely Thailand's National Scientific and Technical Committee, Technical Committee on the Assessment for Sustainability and Appropriate Reference Point Determination in Marine Animals Management, and the Committee on Sustainable Blue Crab Management of Thailand. Walailak University collaborates with NGOs, namely the Federation of Thai Fisher Folk Association and the Thai Sea Watch Association, to organize an ongoing stewardship program in recovering marine resources and provide knowledge on ocean stewardship issues, e.g., the protection of aquatic animals of a size that is smaller than that prescribed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, sustainable fishing practices, overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and destructive fishing practices.
