WU’s Action Plan for Reducing Plastic Waste on Campus

Walailak University has implemented guidelines and an action plan in place to reduce plastic waste on campus and its usage and eliminate the distribution of handled plastic bags and foam packaging in food establishments on campus. This initiative aligns with the green university policy, specifically the fifth strategic goal, which aims to enhance its image as a “Happy Green Campus.” Waste management measures have been introduced in key areas, including WU Food Centers, shops, food kiosks, restaurants, etc. All vendors are required to refrain from offering handled plastic bags and foam containers for food, supporting waste reduction at the source through the 3Rs principle: Reduce, Reuse, and Reject.
From 2022 to 2025, Walailak University has developed an action plan for plastic waste management aimed at minimizing the amount of waste sent to landfills. The plan focuses on reducing single-use plastic items such as bags, bottles, and tubes that are discarded after a single use. In addition, WU has a single-use plastic reduction policy in place including the following initiatives:
      1. Walailak University promotes awareness and discipline among the public, students, and staff to reduce the use of single-use plastics.
      2. In 2023, Walailak University issued guidelines for reducing single-use plastics, requiring all stores and shops on campus to use 100 percent recycled plastic bags or biodegradable bags instead of handled plastic bags.
      3. Walailak University conducts ongoing campaigns encouraging the use of recyclable food containers. All food stores and shops at the university offer discounts when staff, students, and others use their own containers.
      4. To support the goal of a green and happy campus, Walailak University applies the 5S methodology to reduce plastic use in the workplace and promotes the 5S policy on its departmental websites.
      5. Walailak University supports the “Green Dormitory” project, organized by the Walailak Marine Conservation Club. This environmental initiative includes activities focused on marine conservation and plastic waste reduction to promote sustainability.
