Walailak University’s Student Unions Engage and Advocacy for Student and the Campus

At WU, two primary student unions form the foundation of student governance and advocacy: the Student Administrative Board (SAB) and the Student Council of Walailak University. Both organizations were established under the Walailak University Regulation, B.E. 2540, and have significantly contributed to student welfare and university development.
Student Administrative Board (SAB)

The Student Administrative Board (SAB) is responsible for setting policies, planning, and conducting projects that enhance student life. The SAB oversees student clubs and organizations, ensuring their smooth operation while fostering an engaging and supportive environment. In 2023, the SAB spearheaded several key initiatives:

  • Exhibition of Student Clubs: A showcase event to encourage student participation and strengthen the sense of community within the university.
  • Meetings with the University President: Direct engagement with the President of WU to address student concerns and enhance administrative responsiveness.
  • Remembrance Event for Mr. Seub Nakhasathien: A tribute to the renowned Thai environmentalist, promoting environmental awareness and student activism in conservation efforts.

Student Council of Walailak University

The Student Council of Walailak University serves as a check-and-balance mechanism to the SAB, providing feedback, recommendations, and advocacy on behalf of students. Key activities in 2023 included:

  • Opposition to the Student Representatives Council of Thailand Act: In collaboration with other student councils nationwide, WU’s Student Council opposed legislation that threatened student autonomy and freedom.
  • Safe Driving Course for Motorcycle Users: A proactive initiative to promote road safety among students.
  • Monthly Student Feedback Meetings: Regular sessions to address student concerns, ensuring their voices are heard and acted upon.

In 2024, they ensure to play an active role in decision-making and university policy formation. The unions launched several key initiatives:

  • Workshop on Student Development Strategies: A collaborative effort with university officials to align student activities with real needs while minimizing redundancies.
  • Student Leadership Seminar: A seminar designed to enhance governance skills among student leaders, fostering collaboration between the Student Council and academic clubs.
  • New Student Orientation: A comprehensive introduction to campus facilities, resources, and services for incoming students.
  • Parent Meeting for New Students: A transparent engagement with parents to build trust and highlight available student support mechanisms.
  • WU Freshy Award 2024: A prestigious competition celebrating student creativity and teamwork while fostering strong peer connections.
  • “Pradu Games” Sports Festival: A campus-wide sports competition that enhances school spirit, teamwork, and student engagement.
Walailak University’s student unions exemplify the power of student engagement in governance, advocacy, and community building. Through their leadership, these unions ensure a holistic and fulfilling university experience, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to their academic and social environments. As key pillars of WU’s commitment to student rights and participation, the Student Administrative Board and Student Council continue to drive positive changes, fostering a university culture built on inclusivity, leadership, and excellence.
