Walailak University covers a total area of 15,350,400.00 square meters, of which 5,470,315.45 square meters (35.64%) are forested. This area is characterized by large trees and high biodiversity, both naturally occurring and planted, with dense vertical growth and undergrowth. The forested area must be owned by the university and used for academic or community purposes, such as research, teaching, and community engagement. The university has also established the Theparatratchasuda Natural History and Ecology Museum within the botanical garden to support biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and the dissemination of local knowledge. The museum serves as a learning hub for natural resources, biodiversity, and the traditional knowledge of Southern Thailand, utilizing modern technology and interactive learning tools to create engaging and participatory educational experiences.

Furthermore, the university participates in the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative (PGCP-RI), focusing on the conservation of plant genetic resources in Thailand. The forest and botanical garden areas are actively used for research, teaching, and the conservation of rare and endangered plant species, providing benefits for both academic learning and community engagement. The natural history museum is strategically located by a large reservoir, with the Khao Luang mountain range as a backdrop, enhancing both ecological and educational value. This reflects the university’s commitment to sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of environmental learning.
