Supporting Student Well-Being Through Affordable On-Campus Housing
Access to safe, affordable, and suitable housing is an important factor in enabling students to pursue higher education successfully. For many students, particularly those from low-income households or those who travel from distant areas, the cost of accommodation, transportation, food, and other living expenses can create significant financial pressures. Providing affordable housing close to educational facilities can help reduce these burdens while allowing students to live in a safe, supportive, and convenient environment.
Walailak University recognizes that access to affordable accommodation is an important component of an inclusive and student-centered campus. By providing reasonably priced on-campus housing and continuously developing residential facilities, the University helps students reduce living and commuting expenses while improving their access to classrooms, learning resources, healthcare, recreational facilities, and other essential campus services. On-campus accommodation also provides opportunities for students to build social connections, participate in university activities, and become more actively engaged in campus life.
Affordable student housing also contributes to sustainable campus development. Locating accommodation within or close to the University can reduce the need for daily travel between off-campus residences and the campus, helping to lower transportation-related costs and environmental impacts. At the same time, well-planned residential facilities can promote a safer, more accessible, and more supportive living environment for students.
Through its commitment to affordable and accessible student accommodation, Walailak University seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not become an unnecessary barrier to students’ educational opportunities, well-being, and participation in university life. These efforts contribute to a more inclusive campus where students can live, learn, and develop within a supportive and sustainable environment.
Affordable Housing Management and Evaluation
Walailak University places student perspectives at the center of its approach to affordable on-campus housing. The Center of Property Management oversees the University’s student dormitories and plays a central role in maintaining affordable rental rates while ensuring that residential facilities remain safe, functional, and suitable for student life. To strengthen student participation in dormitory management, the Center has established Student Dormitory Committees in every dormitory. These committees serve as a direct channel between students and the University, enabling student representatives to raise concerns, provide feedback, share residents’ experiences, and discuss matters related to dormitory management, including accommodation fees.
The University also evaluates the affordability of its dormitories through direct consultation with student representatives. Dormitory Committee members are invited to gather and communicate the opinions of students living in their respective dormitories, allowing the University to better understand students’ actual financial concerns and housing needs. Regular discussions provide an opportunity for the Center of Property Management to consider student feedback when reviewing dormitory fees, facilities, services, and other aspects of residential management. This participatory approach helps ensure that housing policies are not determined solely from an administrative perspective but also reflect the experiences and needs of the students who use the accommodation.
In addition to collecting student feedback, Walailak University compares its dormitory fees with accommodation prices in the surrounding area to assess whether on-campus housing remains genuinely affordable. In 2025, a total of 5,731 students required on-campus accommodation. A comparison conducted by the Center of Property Management in collaboration with student representatives found that off-campus dormitory prices generally ranged from 2,500 to 5,000 baht per month. However, accommodation at the lower end of this range, around 2,500 baht per month, was rarely available within a 15-kilometer radius of the University, while most available options cost more than 3,000 baht per month.
Based on this comparison and feedback from student representatives, Walailak University maintains an affordable pricing policy for its on-campus dormitories. In 2025, on-campus accommodation was available at approximately 1,000–2,000 baht per month, substantially below the typical prices of comparable off-campus accommodation. This pricing approach helps students avoid the additional financial pressures associated with higher rents and long-distance commuting, while also providing convenient access to classrooms, learning facilities, healthcare services, recreational spaces, and other university facilities.
By combining student participation, regular feedback, and comparisons with local housing prices, Walailak University seeks to ensure that its definition of affordable housing reflects students’ actual circumstances. The approach enables the University to monitor housing affordability in relation to the surrounding market and respond to changing student needs. More than simply providing low-cost accommodation, the policy supports an inclusive campus environment in which financial limitations are less likely to prevent students from accessing safe, convenient, and suitable housing while pursuing their education.
Comparison of Off-Campus Dormitory Prices to WU Dormitory Average Prices
Walailak University continuously evaluates the affordability of its student dormitories by comparing on-campus accommodation rates with those of dormitories and apartments in the surrounding area. This comparison helps the University assess whether its housing remains financially accessible to students and provides evidence for maintaining affordable accommodation rates.
Walailak University offers several types of student dormitories at monthly rates ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 baht. The lowest-cost option is a non-air-conditioned dormitory at 1,000 baht per month, accommodating up to four students per room. Air-conditioned accommodation is available at 1,500 baht per month for four students per room and 2,000 baht per month for two students per room. This range provides students with different accommodation options according to their preferences, comfort requirements, and financial circumstances.
A comparison with eight nearby off-campus accommodations demonstrates the significant cost advantage of living in WU dormitories. Off-campus monthly rates range from 3,700 to 6,000 baht, substantially higher than the University’s rates of 1,000–2,000 baht per month. The difference ranges from approximately 1,700 to 5,000 baht per month depending on the accommodation and WU dormitory option used for comparison.
Among the surveyed accommodations, Pan Suk Apartment 1–2 has the highest monthly rate at 6,000 baht, representing a difference of 4,000–5,000 baht compared with WU dormitories. M-Place – M Valley is priced at 5,400 baht per month, while K&A Apartment and Na San Suk Dormitory are priced at 5,000 and 4,700 baht, respectively. Even the lower-priced off-campus options, such as Ngam Sa-nga Place at 3,700 baht and Taweesuk Apartment at 3,800 baht, remain considerably more expensive than WU’s on-campus accommodation.
The comparison shows that off-campus accommodation can cost approximately 85% to 500% more than WU dormitories, depending on the accommodation and the WU housing option used as the reference point. At the highest end, Pan Suk Apartment 1–2 costs up to 5,000 baht more per month than the 1,000-baht WU dormitory. For a student staying for a full academic year, choosing affordable on-campus accommodation can therefore represent substantial savings in annual living expenses.
Beyond reducing rental costs, affordable on-campus accommodation can also help students reduce transportation expenses and commuting time because they can live close to their classrooms and university facilities. Students can therefore allocate more of their financial resources to education, food, learning materials, healthcare, and other essential needs. The availability of affordable housing also helps reduce the risk that accommodation costs become a barrier to accessing and completing higher education.
Through regular market comparisons and consideration of student feedback, Walailak University is able to maintain a housing policy that responds to actual local accommodation costs while keeping student housing financially accessible. This approach demonstrates the University’s commitment to providing not only housing, but also an affordable and supportive living environment that contributes to student well-being, educational participation, and inclusive campus development.
Providing Affordable Housing for Students
Walailak University provides affordable on-campus accommodation to support students’ access to safe, convenient, and suitable housing throughout their studies. The University operates 15 student dormitories with a total capacity of approximately 5,500 beds, providing a range of accommodation options to accommodate students with different preferences, living arrangements, and financial circumstances.
The University’s main student dormitory group, known as Laksananives, comprises 13 buildings: Laksananives 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 18. Located within the University campus, these dormitories provide students with convenient access to classrooms, libraries, learning facilities, healthcare services, recreational areas, and other essential campus facilities. Their on-campus location also helps students reduce daily transportation costs and commuting time.
In addition to the Laksananives dormitories, Walailak University provides WU Residence A, WU Residence B, and WU Residence C, which offer fully air-conditioned accommodation and additional residential options for students seeking enhanced comfort and facilities. The availability of different dormitory types allows students to select accommodation according to their individual needs and financial capacity while remaining within the university environment.
The University’s approach is designed to ensure that affordable housing is not limited to providing a place to stay, but also contributes to a supportive and inclusive campus experience. By offering a substantial number of beds at affordable rates, students can live close to their places of study and access university services without facing the higher rental and transportation costs commonly associated with off-campus accommodation.
Through the provision of diverse and affordable on-campus housing, Walailak University helps reduce the financial burden associated with student living expenses and supports students in maintaining a stable living environment throughout their education. This contributes to a more inclusive campus in which students’ financial circumstances are less likely to become a barrier to their participation in higher education and university life.

Student Housing Facilities, Safety, and Well-Being
Walailak University places strong emphasis on providing students with safe, secure, and supportive living environments. Access to each student dormitory is controlled through fingerprint authentication systems, allowing only authorized residents and staff to enter. Dormitory areas are monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV systems and supported by regular patrols from professional security personnel. These measures help strengthen campus security and provide students with greater confidence and peace of mind throughout their residence.
In addition to security measures, WU dormitories provide essential facilities that support students’ academic and social lives. These include study areas, common lounges, and recreational spaces where students can study, relax, and interact with their peers. The university also operates electric shuttle bus services around the dormitory areas, providing convenient transportation between residential areas and key locations on campus and supporting students’ mobility without requiring private vehicles.
WU’s approach to student housing integrates affordability with accessibility, safety, and student well-being. By maintaining dormitory fees below the cost of comparable off-campus accommodation, the university helps reduce students’ living expenses while providing convenient access to campus facilities and services. The availability of both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned accommodation also gives students greater flexibility to select housing according to their financial circumstances and personal needs.
Student well-being is further supported through a caring and inclusive residential environment. In addition to physical security measures, WU provides access to student support services, including peer support and mental health assistance through the Smile and Smart Center. These services encourage students to seek support, care for one another, and develop a stronger sense of belonging within the university community. Together, affordable accommodation, secure facilities, convenient transportation, and student support services contribute to a supportive residential environment that enables students to live, study, and participate fully in university life.
Financial Support for Students
Walailak University recognizes that housing affordability is closely connected to students’ ability to participate fully in higher education. In addition to maintaining affordable dormitory rates, the University provides financial assistance and flexible arrangements to ensure that students facing financial difficulties can access and maintain suitable accommodation.
Through the Center of Property Management and Student Dormitory Committees, WU maintains a participatory approach to identifying students’ housing needs and financial concerns. Student representatives provide feedback on dormitory services and accommodation-related issues, helping the University understand the challenges faced by students and develop appropriate support measures. This approach strengthens communication between students and the University and ensures that housing policies are responsive to students’ actual circumstances.
For students experiencing significant financial hardship, Walailak University allocates a dedicated budget to provide free accommodation. This support is particularly important for financially disadvantaged students who may otherwise face difficulties meeting their basic living expenses while pursuing their education. By removing or substantially reducing accommodation costs for eligible students, the initiative helps students maintain stable living conditions and continue their studies without the additional pressure of housing expenses.
WU also provides scholarships and other forms of financial assistance that can help students manage their overall educational and living costs. These measures complement the University’s affordable dormitory pricing by addressing the broader financial challenges that students may experience during their studies. Together, they help ensure that a student’s financial circumstances do not unnecessarily limit their access to university life and educational opportunities.
In addition, the University recognizes that some students may experience temporary difficulties in paying their dormitory fees on time. To provide greater flexibility, students who are unable to make a full payment upfront may request a payment delay or arrange to settle their fees through manageable monthly installments. Students can submit a request to the Center of Property Management, which reviews individual circumstances and determines appropriate arrangements on a case-by-case basis. This flexible approach provides students with additional time to manage their finances while maintaining access to university accommodation.

By combining affordable rental rates with free accommodation for eligible students, scholarships, and flexible payment arrangements, Walailak University provides multiple layers of financial support for student housing. These measures help reduce financial stress, promote equal access to education, and support students’ well-being and academic continuity. They also contribute to a more inclusive and socially sustainable campus where students from different economic circumstances can access safe and affordable accommodation and participate fully in university life.
Walailak University’s provision of affordable student housing creates significant positive impacts on students’ financial security, educational opportunities, and overall well-being. By providing accommodation at substantially lower rates than comparable off-campus options, WU helps reduce students’ living expenses and the financial pressure associated with pursuing higher education. Financial assistance, flexible payment arrangements, and support for students experiencing economic difficulties further strengthen the university’s ability to ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent students from accessing suitable accommodation.
Affordable on-campus housing also provides practical benefits by allowing students to live close to classrooms, academic facilities, healthcare services, recreational areas, and other essential university facilities. Convenient access to electric shuttle bus services further supports student mobility and can reduce the need for private transportation. This helps students save on transportation costs and time while contributing to a more sustainable campus environment.
The combination of secure facilities, 24-hour surveillance, professional security personnel, and essential residential facilities provides students with a safe and comfortable place to live and study. At the same time, student participation through Dormitory Committees gives residents opportunities to express their needs and contribute to discussions concerning their living environment. Together with support from the Smile and Smart Center and other student services, these measures promote a stronger sense of belonging, mutual support, and student well-being.
Overall, WU’s student housing system demonstrates that affordable housing can contribute to much more than reducing accommodation costs. It supports educational equity by helping students from different financial backgrounds remain engaged in university life, strengthens student well-being and security, reduces practical barriers associated with off-campus living, and promotes a more inclusive and sustainable campus community. Through these efforts, Walailak University continues to create a residential environment in which students can live safely, manage their expenses, focus on their education, and participate fully in university life.
