The Volume of Water Consumption at WU

The Volume of Water Consumption at WU

In 2022, the population at Walailak University was 13,534 of which 10,999 were students and 2,535 were staff. The water resource for tap water production at WU was the raw water from the Pruk Sachon Reservoir. The total area of the reservoir is 259,290 square meters, with 2,852,190 cubic meters of capacity. The raw water from the reservoir was not contaminated by chemical substances or wastewater from industrial plants. The capacity for tap water production in 2022 at WU was 4,800 cubic meters per day.

The amount of water used on the whole campus in 2022 at WU was 265,425 cubic meters. The amount of 161,112.975 cubic meters used in 2022 on campus was harvested from stormwater and rainwater, accounting for 60.70% of the total volume of the water, and the amount of 104,312.025 cubic meters was from treated wastewater used for watering plants and cleaning roads and vehicles, accounting for 39.30% of the total volume of the water.

The average amount of water used per day at WU in 2022 was 727.19 cubic meters. Meanwhile, the amount of water consumption per population was 1.63 cubic meters per person per month, or 0.05 cubic meters per person per day.

In 2020, the population at WU was 10,796, of which 8,553 were students and 2,243 were staff. The amount of water used on the whole campus was 1,083,740 cubic meters, accounting for 8.37 cubic meters per person per month or 0.28 cubic meters per person per day.

Meanwhile, in 2021, the population at WU was 11,920, of which 9,705 were students and 2,215 were staff. The amount of water used on the whole campus was 956,270 cubic meters. The amount of water used per population in 2021 was 6.69 cubic meters per person per month, or 0.22 cubic meters per person per day.

Walailak University has been campaigning for energy, water, and environmental conservation. Comparing the proportion of water consumption between 2020 to 2022, the record suggested that the amount had gradually decreased even though the population at WU continuously increased. From 2020 to 2022, it can be seen that the amount of water consumption was averagely decreased by 6.74 cubic meters per person per month, or 0.23 cubic meters per person per day, accounting for 82.14% of saving the amount of water.

Conscious water consumption has been one of the sustainability agendas at WU to promote sustainability among students and staff. Every step of tap water production implemented by WU never harms or affects the environment or livelihood of local communities, as the university aims to be a sustainable university in the international community.
