WU’s Commitment to the Active Campaign on Conscious Water Usage for the Walailak Community and Local Communities

Promoting Conscious Water Promotion on Campus

Promoting conscious water promotion is what WU has been doing for the Walailak community through policies, actions, procedures, and activities both on and beyond campus. WU has used labels to convey to students, staff, and visitors to save water consumption in all places that provide water services, including bathrooms, toilets, car washing points, dishwashing rooms, kitchens, and others.

In order to holistically promote conscious water usage on campus, WU promotes conscious water usage through online platforms, social media, email, and others. Every organization at WU will be given limited time to use water based on the operation time of the offices. If any equipment is broken, the staff can inform the relevant organizations to request repairs. In 2022, Walailak University issued a policy called “Water Reuse Guidelines,” which encourages the Walailak community to use water consciously. In addition, Walailak University has integrated conscious water usage into education and curriculum.

Promoting Conscious Water Promotion for Local Communities in Nakhon Si Thammart

Walailak University cooperated with the Office for Prevention and Mitigation; Nakhon Si Thammarat has organized a workshop on conscious water usage at the local level. The educational workshop has been continuously organized with the aim of disseminating knowledge on utilizing data from the Geographic Information System (GIS) for water resource management and disaster prevention for the local communities located near the Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport. The local communities always face flooding and droughts every year due to climate change. The data from GIS can show the situation for early warning; meanwhile, it also provides information to those local communities about water resources. WU, through Asst. Prof. Dr. Pakorn Ditthakit, has organized the workshops to instruct the local people to use water resources consciously for consumption, agriculture, and others.

The local communities included Pak Phun Municipality, Tha Phae Subdistrict Municipality, Tha Ngio Subdistrict Municipality, Moklan Subdistrict Administrative Organization, Don Tako Subdistrict Administrative Organization, Pho Thong Subdistrict Administrative Organization, Nariang Subdistrict Administrative Organization, and In Khiri Subdistrict Administrative Organization.

The workshop has been mobilizing the local communities to create learning processes using the data from the GIS system. The local people can monitor situations or receive early warnings. In addition, Google Earth has served as a database for the local people to explore the data on land use, rainfall volume, and others. Another purpose of the utilization of the GIS system is to keep improving local species of animals.
