Walailak University’s Commitment to Public Free Access to Museum, Exhibition Space, and Galleries

Walailak University, as an educational institution, has prepared spaces for people of all genders, ages, and backgrounds to access knowledge freely in various forms. Consequently, Walailak University provides free public access to museums, exhibition space, and galleries.

1. Sirin Museum

Sirin Museum of Walailak University has been graciously named by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as “Princess of Conservation” with the objective of allowing the public to experience following in the footsteps of Her Royal Highness, “from the mountain tops to the depths of the sea.” The museum building has been designed in the shape of the number 8, symbolizing the commitment to perpetually and infinitely conserve natural resources. This symbolism is conveyed through the eight exhibition rooms within the museum:

2. Exhibition Space

          2.1 Architecture & Design Building (AD Building)

The exhibition showcases architectural design works created by students of the School of Architecture and Design. Numerous exhibitions and activities within these events welcome those interested, entirely free of charge. The activity is organized to showcase the architectural design works of architecture students at Walailak University, and to provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the educational journey of architecture students. The activities within the event include:

  • Exhibition of Student Work: Showcasing architectural design works created by architecture students from all academic levels
  • Alumni Work Exhibition: Displaying works by alumni
  • Creativity and Research Exhibition by Faculty Members: Presenting creative and research works by professors
  • Special Lectures: Featuring lectures by faculty members on their research and expertise
  • Knowledge Sharing: Providing knowledge on architectural materials and design innovation from leading companies
  • This event serves as a platform for students to exhibit their work, for alumni to showcase their achievements, for faculty members to share their research, and for participants to learn from experts in architectural materials and design.

2.2 Thaiburi Hall

Walailak University, in collaboration with the Science Society of Thailand under the Patronage of His Majesty the King, organized the 48th International Congress on Science, Technology, and Technology-based Innovation (STT48). This congress was held under the theme “Science and Technology for Advancing towards SDGs.”

Furthermore, within the event, there were exhibitions showcasing knowledge in various fields.

2.3 Walailak Square

The academic conference of the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiation of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn or RSPG has been held continuously. This year, Walailak University succeeded in hosting the 11th Academic Conference and Exhibition “Thailand’s Resources: 30 Years, RSPG for Real Benefits to the Public” during September 19-24, 2022to honor Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn for continuing the mission in conserving the nation’s resource initiated by His late Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and providing opportunities for youth, the public, academics,  private and public sectors as well as policy-making organizations to learn and appreciate the diversity of Thai resources’ potentials.

As for the RSPG exhibition, the content features studies with geographical diversities ranging from mountain ranges to the sea such as the exhibition “Microorganisms from Khao Luang the Private Property that Benefits the public” looking into local microorganisms useful for agriculture, testing and selecting efficient species, and accordingly developing suitable innovations to achieve optimal outcomes/ “Nipa Palm Abundance of the River Basin” promoting integration of local wisdom and added value of the products but still preserving local identity/ “Blue Crab: Marine Resource” establishing blue crab banks and learning centers educating local communities in releasing blue crabs to natural habitats and the application of Mueang Nakhon Culture. There are also exhibitions on School Botanical Garden and Local Resource Base as well as academic conference sessions, special lectures presentations by students/academic conferences on Local Resource Base by administrators and academics of local government organizations.

This is the opportunity for organizations participating in the Royal Initiation to review their potential, competence, as well as database management in order to showcase the potential of Thai resources for sustainable mutual benefits. In addition, in the event, there are southern art performances, performed by School Botanical Garden members, food fair and local products.

The event welcome thousands of participants from various organizations responding to royal initiatives, from the regions all over Thailand. The local government agencies in all sectors of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province also took take part. Each day, over 5,000 interested individuals from the general public visited the fair and learned about the projects and innovations.

3. The galleries

          3.1 Lecture Buildings

The lecture buildings display paintings showcasing the way of life of the people in Nakhon Si Thammarat province and the southern region. These works are the result of student participation in Lae Tai Activity. The objective of this activity is to promote and support the creation of works related to the arts and culture of the southern region, such as architecture, traditions, customs, ways of life, as well as the diverse natural resources found in the southern region.

Currently, the winning painting from the competition are being used to decorate the interior of Walailak University’s Lecture Buildings as a permanent free-access gallery. These paintings contribute to creating a vibrant atmosphere within the building through the use of art.

3.2 AD Building and Walailak University Hospital

At the AD Building and Walailak University Hospital, the pictures of Walailak University are displayed as a permanent free access gallery to allow the general public to admire the beautiful campus scenery within the university at AD Building.

3.3 CLM Building

Open spaces of CLM Building host various free-access exhibitions throughout the year. One of the most outstanding exhibitions is “30th Anniversary Walailak University: Then and Now, The Exhibition Presented by Walailak University Archives” to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Walailak University’s founding. The Exhibition displayed a collection of images indicating the transformation of Walailak University in 30 stories over 30 years. Prominent images included changes in physical landscape, teaching and learning, and student lifestyles.  The exhibit of a virtual 3D hologram of the symbol of 30th Anniversary Walailak University also called for great interest.
