Walailak University Promotes Bicycle Use to Reduce Energy Consumption

Walailak University undertakes a plan to encourage students and staff to use bicycles, public transportation, and the university’s mass transit system within the campus, rather than personal vehicles. This plan aims to reduce the number of private vehicles on campus, and consequently reduce air pollution while improving air quality. It also targets a reduction of traffic congestion, saving time, and conserving energy and money.

The university has designated bicycle routes and built covered walkways connecting various academic buildings to promote the use of bicycles within the campus, enhancing safety and energy efficiency for sustainable commuting. The university’s efforts align with its 3-year university development plan (2020-2022) and its 20-year strategic plan (2020-2041), with a focus on transforming into a green and sustainable Residential University with complete public utilities and facilities.

To further facilitate bicycle usage within the university, the following measures have been implemented:

  1. Designation of bicycle usage areas covering the education zone, student accommodation zone, and staff accommodation zone.
  2. Provision of bicycle parking facilities at each building, ensuring that each building has at least one bicycle parking spot.
  3. Establishment of bicycle maintenance stations with three locations:
    • Location 1: Near the Student Activity Building
    • Location 2: At Laksananives5 Dormitory
    • Location 3: At The Center for Library Resources and Educational Media
  •

The general public or users of bicycles can report any damaged or malfunctioning bicycles to the nearest repair and maintenance garage, with contact information and fax numbers available for each center/section/faculty. Additionally, there are areas for bicycle and motorcycle repair shops located within the university’s premises.
