Brownfield Site: The Transformation of Abandoned Shrimp Ponds into New Building

The School of Agricultural Technology and Food Industry had experimental ponds for marine animal farming to allow students to study and conduct research related to the breeding of marine animals, particularly shrimp farming. This led to the production of nutrients and organic matter from the food and waste of the shrimp, which in turn contributed to the degradation of water quality in the area. This was caused by the chemicals used in shrimp farming, such as disinfectant, antibiotic, and fungicides. After 2016, these experimental ponds for marine animal farming were abandoned and turned into brownfield site, no longer serving any purpose, and contaminated with chemicals.

In 2022, Walailak University implemented a policy to develop brownfield sites to maximize their usage and reduce chemical contamination. Consequently, the buildings were built on brownfield site within the experimental area to serve as the office building and Mechanical Repair Center of the Division of Landscaping and Building. The abandoned shrimp ponds were filled, providing space for parking machinery and multi-purpose yard.
