Walailak Public Museum: Relics of Nature, Fine Art, and History  

Walailak University offers free public access to all museums, exhibition spaces, and galleries, works of art, and artefacts, providing diverse learning opportunities for people of all genders, ages, and backgrounds. The university has joined the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (RSPG) to continue King Rama IX’s legacy of conserving natural resources. This project emphasizes community participation to raise awareness, appreciation, and sustainable use of natural resources throughout Thailand.

1.Museum

1.1 Sirin Museum

The Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum or Sirin Museum at Walailak University is designed in the shape of the number 8, symbolizing continuity and sustainability in preserving natural resources, the environment, and cultural heritage. It includes replicas of Krung Ching Waterfall, representing the abundance of the Khao Luang mountain range, and a simulated sea and beach area, symbolizing the richness of the Gulf of Thailand. The museum’s design theme, “Following the Footsteps of the Princess, from Mountain Peaks to Under the Sea,” honors Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It is located by a large reservoir in Walailak University Botanic Park, with the scenic Khao Luang mountain range as its backdrop. The exhibition content is displayed across eight exhibition chambers, which are:

1. The Kroek Krai (Glorious) Princess Conservationist Chamber: The exhibition is divided into three main sections: 1) the royal biography honoring Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn related to the establishment of the RSPG (Plant Genetic Conservation Project) 2) the overall goals and 30-year mission of the RSPG 3) Research and academic services related to plant genetic conservation in Southern Thailand under the Royal Initiative project, marking the 30th anniversary of Walailak University.

2. Remembrance of the Resourced Assets Chamber: This room focuses on the resources of Southern Thailand, research, and projects under the Royal Initiative. It highlights topics such as resource databases, training programs, local resource-based work, school botanical gardens, eco-tourism data archives, archaeological research, art and culture, indigenous wisdom, Thai traditional medicine, and herbal remedies within botanical gardens.

3. Khao Luang’s Abundant Resources Chamber: The exhibition presents content about the natural resources of Southern Thailand, with a focus on the resources of the Khao Luang mountain range. It aims to showcase the biodiversity and cultural wisdom of the area. The exhibit features a model of the Krung Ching Waterfall, replicas of plant and animal species found in Khao Luang, a display diorama for the tropical rainforest ecosystem, and major plant species in the Khao Luang area and the southern region, along with virtual tour media for an immersive experience.

4. Chamber of Limitless Potential: Conducted under the supervision of Walailak University and its partner networks, this room represents research outcomes and initiatives inspired by royal projects. It focuses on the conservation, development, and value addition to ensure the sustainability of three types of resources: physical resources, biological resources, and cultural and intellectual heritage. Examples include the extraction of compounds from herbs and various plants for medical purposes, the study and preservation of community cultural practices, and the development of resources into products for conservation and value addition. These efforts aim to encourage communities to utilize resources sustainably in line with the guidelines set by the Plant Genetic Conservation Project.

5. The Local Resources of Pak Phanang River Basin Chamber: The chamber displays research related to the Pak Phanang River Basin area, including local products derived from indigenous wisdom and forest ecosystems, native rice varieties, Grapefruit Ruby of Siam, local vegetables, and traditional foods. The aim is to illustrate how research and academic services under the Royal Initiative Projects can be applied to promote local development and resolve resource conflicts in the community, by integrating efforts from all sectors within Nakhon Si Thammarat.

6. Coastline of Plenty Chamber: This exhibition room replicates the physical features of the coastline using multimedia and displays some real objects. There are glass showcases depicting beach forest and mangrove forest ecosystems, local plant species, and real examples of animals and plants. The exhibition also includes photographs of the lifestyle of coastal communities along the Gulf of Thailand, as well as notable academic services by Walailak University, such as “Sustainable Blue Crab alongside the Thai Sea” and initial expeditionary research on the marine diversity of shrimps and mantis shrimps along the coast of Nakhon Si Thammarat.

7. The Abundant Gulf of Thailand Chamber: Featuring an aquarium displaying marine animals, the room was enhanced by lighting and sound effects for an exciting experience. It also includes a large whale skeleton and presents research findings and academic services under the support of the Plant Genetic Conservation Project (RSPG) and Walailak University, along with network partners involved in conserving marine resources in the Gulf of Thailand. One significant project is the “Sea Cucumber Bank: Sustainable Conservation and Utilization of Sea Cucumbers.”

8. Absolute Sake for All Chamber: The hindmost chamber serves as a summary of the knowledge presented in all the rooms, emphasizing the purpose of the museum. It showcases projects under the Royal Initiative of the Plant Genetic Conservation Project (RSPG), conducted by Walailak University and its network for the conservation of natural resources and the environment, aiming for sustainable utilization. It aims to instill a love for natural resources in the visitors through short films and e-books, within a relaxing atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy a model waterfall and beach area, enhancing their enjoyment and overall experience of the museum.

The concept behind the exhibition in the eight rooms of the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum at Walailak University is to compile and present the knowledge and identity of the natural resources and cultural heritage of Southern Thailand. These exhibits use modern technology and engaging learning media to inspire and entertain visitors, encouraging an enjoyable and educational experience that leaves a lasting impression and a desire to return to discover new things about the natural resources and cultural heritage displayed in this museum.

The museum building has been designed in the shape of the number 8, symbolizing continuity and sustainability (infinity) in the conservation of natural resources, the environment, culture, and local wisdom, ensuring their preservation within Thai society for generations.

1.2 Toompang Archeology Site:

The Toompang Archaeological Site, placed within the grounds of Walailak University, stands as a treasured public heritage area, both historically and naturally. It serves as an important educational and cultural resource, offering visitors a rich experience through its diverse array of local plant species and native birds. Officially recognized by the 12th Regional Office of The Arts Department, Nakhonsithammarat, the establishment of the Toompang Archaeological Site was announced in the Government Gazette, Vol. 118, Special Issue 33Ngo, on 9th April B.E. 2544 (2001).
In 2023, Walailak University began constructing the “Walailak Abode of Culture,” a Thai Southern Arts and Culture Learning Center, with a budget of 39,996,000 baht. Expected to be completed by 2025, the center will focus on researching and disseminating local wisdom through modern technology and promoting continuous knowledge exchange in arts and culture.

Inside, a museum dedicated to the Toompang Archeological Site will display ancient artifacts, cultural objects, and exhibitions on the Southern Thai way of life, traditional performances, and more. This museum aims to become a leading center for arts and culture in the upper Southern region. Once completed, Toompang is expected to become a significant historical learning center for the public, free of charge.

2. Exhibition Spaces

2.1 Architecture & Design Building (AD Building)

The exhibition presents an annual impressive collection of architectural projects crafted by students from Walailak University’s School of Architecture and Design. Open to the public, this event offers a unique insight into the academic and creative experiences of architecture students. Highlights of the event include:

Student Work Exhibition: Architectural designs by students from all academic levels.
Alumni Exhibition: Displays of alumni projects.
Faculty Creativity and Research Exhibition: Presentations of faculty creative works and research.
Special Lectures: Insights from faculty members on their research and expertise.
Knowledge Sharing: Presentations on architectural materials and design innovations from leading companies.

This event acts as a dynamic platform where students present their creations, alumni display their accomplishments, faculty members share their research, and attendees gain valuable insights from experts in architectural materials and design innovation.

2.2 Thaiburi Hall

In 2023, the National Research Council of Thailand appointed Walailak University to host the 12th Annual Regional Research Expo for 2023, held at Walailak University in Thaiburi Hall, Thaiburi Subdistrict, Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The event received support from the National Research Council of Thailand, regional network agencies, private organizations, and regional schools. The activities included exhibitions for the Royal Honorary Project, exhibitions showcasing research and innovation projects supported by the council, research and innovation presentations by high school students, exhibitions of regional research network projects, a Southern Science Park Innomart, community research centers presenting the identity of the southern region, local community food and product booths, an innovation business concept competition for regional development (southern region), a Highlight Stage, and 13 conferences and seminars.

Due to the interest in various activities, more than 3,000 people registered to attend the event.

2.3 Walailak Square

The 12th Regional Research Expo 2023 was organized by Walailak University, in collaboration with Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, under the theme “Research and Innovation for Sustainable Quality of Life,” at Walailak Square. This area showcased exhibitions, research presentations, innovations, and high-quality research activities from research network agencies across the country. The aim is to disseminate research outcomes and activities to users in various regions, acting as a driving force for research and innovation to support sustainable development in Southern Thailand.
The expo also applied the BCG Model (Bio-Circular-Green Economy) to create resilience and income generation for stable and sustainable local development. It is expected to elevate the research, technology, and innovation potential in the South towards broader and more tangible use at the local level. Moreover, personnel from educational institutions, research agencies, both public and private, as well as students, youths, and the general public, were able to gain knowledge to produce research, products, and innovations, leading to higher-quality outcomes in the future.

3. The galleries

3.1 Lecture Buildings

The lecture buildings at Walailak University feature paintings that beautifully depict the way of life in Nakhon Si Thammarat and the southern region, all created by students as part of the Lae Tai Activity. This initiative aims to promote the arts and culture of Southern Thailand, highlighting its architecture, traditions, customs, and natural resources.
The award-winning artworks from the competition now serve as permanent exhibits, enhancing the lecture buildings’ interiors with their vibrant and culturally rich visuals. These pieces provide free public access, adding an artistic and dynamic ambiance to the university’s spaces.

3.2 AD Building

A permanent gallery at the Architecture & Design Building showcases stunning scenes of the university, offering the public a chance to freely enjoy the campus’s captivating beauty through thoughtfully curated displays.

3.3 Academic Building

The academic buildings at Walailak University are designed to support various functions, including teaching, learning, and departmental activities, with a primary focus on the activities of the academic schools. Additionally, these buildings house meeting rooms of various sizes. The space within the academic buildings is also allocated for showcasing galleries, such as landscapes of the university, historical images, and other exhibits. These galleries are open to visitors free of charge.

3.4 Research Building

The Research Building stands as a testament to Walailak University’s mission to be a beacon of discovery, knowledge, and academic excellence, nurturing the progress of society. With its architecture designed to embody this purpose, the building exudes an atmosphere of serenity, particularly at night, where the tranquil campus offers a peaceful retreat.
During business hours, visitors are welcome to explore the gallery housed within the Research Building, where they can immerse themselves in a quiet yet inspiring space dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and innovation.

3.5 Walailak University Hospital

The Walailak University Hospital’s gallery is a sanctuary of art and culture settled within the heart of medical excellence. As you step inside, you’re greeted by a harmonious blend of serenity and creativity, where the vibrant energy of healing is intertwined with the soothing beauty of curated displays.
Each piece of art tells a story, inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and immerse themselves in the connection between art and well-being. Whether it’s a painting that echoes the quiet strength of nature or a sculpture that captures the elegance of human form, the gallery offers a moment of tranquility in the hospital’s bustling environment, making it a unique cultural retreat that enhances both mind and spirit.

4. Works of Art

4.1 AD Building

Walailak University is hosting an art exhibition under the concept of “ARCH Genesis,” showcasing design works by students from the School of Architecture. The exhibition invites visitors to experience the architectural learning journey and aims to enhance architectural and design knowledge through various artistic displays.

5. Artefacts

5.1 Ancient Southern Thai-style Architectural Model

Walailak University, through the efforts of students from the School of Architecture and Design, constructed a model of an ancient Southern Thai-style house near the Walailak Architecture and Design Building. This model serves as a significant cultural artifact, offering the Walailak community and visitors an opportunity to learn about traditional architectural structures and the intricate building processes that were used during the era of the Sukhothai Kingdom. The project not only preserves Southern Thailand’s rich architectural heritage but also enhances students’ understanding of historical construction techniques. Furthermore, the model fosters cultural pride and promotes awareness of Thailand’s diverse architectural history.
