1.1 Sirin Museum
The Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum or Sirin Museum at Walailak University is designed in the shape of the number 8, symbolizing continuity and sustainability in preserving natural resources, the environment, and cultural heritage. It includes replicas of Krung Ching Waterfall, representing the abundance of the Khao Luang mountain range, and a simulated sea and beach area, symbolizing the richness of the Gulf of Thailand. The museum’s design theme, “Following the Footsteps of the Princess, from Mountain Peaks to Under the Sea,” honors Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It is located by a large reservoir in Walailak University Botanic Park, with the scenic Khao Luang mountain range as its backdrop. The exhibition content is displayed across eight exhibition chambers, which are:
1. The Kroek Krai (Glorious) Princess Conservationist Chamber: The exhibition is divided into three main sections: 1) the royal biography honoring Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn related to the establishment of the RSPG (Plant Genetic Conservation Project) 2) the overall goals and 30-year mission of the RSPG 3) Research and academic services related to plant genetic conservation in Southern Thailand under the Royal Initiative project, marking the 30th anniversary of Walailak University.
2. Remembrance of the Resourced Assets Chamber: This room focuses on the resources of Southern Thailand, research, and projects under the Royal Initiative. It highlights topics such as resource databases, training programs, local resource-based work, school botanical gardens, eco-tourism data archives, archaeological research, art and culture, indigenous wisdom, Thai traditional medicine, and herbal remedies within botanical gardens.
3. Khao Luang’s Abundant Resources Chamber: The exhibition presents content about the natural resources of Southern Thailand, with a focus on the resources of the Khao Luang mountain range. It aims to showcase the biodiversity and cultural wisdom of the area. The exhibit features a model of the Krung Ching Waterfall, replicas of plant and animal species found in Khao Luang, a display diorama for the tropical rainforest ecosystem, and major plant species in the Khao Luang area and the southern region, along with virtual tour media for an immersive experience.
4. Chamber of Limitless Potential: Conducted under the supervision of Walailak University and its partner networks, this room represents research outcomes and initiatives inspired by royal projects. It focuses on the conservation, development, and value addition to ensure the sustainability of three types of resources: physical resources, biological resources, and cultural and intellectual heritage. Examples include the extraction of compounds from herbs and various plants for medical purposes, the study and preservation of community cultural practices, and the development of resources into products for conservation and value addition. These efforts aim to encourage communities to utilize resources sustainably in line with the guidelines set by the Plant Genetic Conservation Project.
5. The Local Resources of Pak Phanang River Basin Chamber: The chamber displays research related to the Pak Phanang River Basin area, including local products derived from indigenous wisdom and forest ecosystems, native rice varieties, Grapefruit Ruby of Siam, local vegetables, and traditional foods. The aim is to illustrate how research and academic services under the Royal Initiative Projects can be applied to promote local development and resolve resource conflicts in the community, by integrating efforts from all sectors within Nakhon Si Thammarat.
6. Coastline of Plenty Chamber: This exhibition room replicates the physical features of the coastline using multimedia and displays some real objects. There are glass showcases depicting beach forest and mangrove forest ecosystems, local plant species, and real examples of animals and plants. The exhibition also includes photographs of the lifestyle of coastal communities along the Gulf of Thailand, as well as notable academic services by Walailak University, such as “Sustainable Blue Crab alongside the Thai Sea” and initial expeditionary research on the marine diversity of shrimps and mantis shrimps along the coast of Nakhon Si Thammarat.
7. The Abundant Gulf of Thailand Chamber: Featuring an aquarium displaying marine animals, the room was enhanced by lighting and sound effects for an exciting experience. It also includes a large whale skeleton and presents research findings and academic services under the support of the Plant Genetic Conservation Project (RSPG) and Walailak University, along with network partners involved in conserving marine resources in the Gulf of Thailand. One significant project is the “Sea Cucumber Bank: Sustainable Conservation and Utilization of Sea Cucumbers.”
8. Absolute Sake for All Chamber: The hindmost chamber serves as a summary of the knowledge presented in all the rooms, emphasizing the purpose of the museum. It showcases projects under the Royal Initiative of the Plant Genetic Conservation Project (RSPG), conducted by Walailak University and its network for the conservation of natural resources and the environment, aiming for sustainable utilization. It aims to instill a love for natural resources in the visitors through short films and e-books, within a relaxing atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy a model waterfall and beach area, enhancing their enjoyment and overall experience of the museum.
The concept behind the exhibition in the eight rooms of the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum at Walailak University is to compile and present the knowledge and identity of the natural resources and cultural heritage of Southern Thailand. These exhibits use modern technology and engaging learning media to inspire and entertain visitors, encouraging an enjoyable and educational experience that leaves a lasting impression and a desire to return to discover new things about the natural resources and cultural heritage displayed in this museum.
