Promoting Sustainability Literacy among WU Students

Walailak University recognizes that instilling a strong foundation in sustainability is essential for students, as they will play a pivotal role in building a more sustainable and resilient world. To promote students’ ability to learn and retain key concepts of sustainability, WU offers its students the opportunity to engage with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through an online course on Thailand’s Massive Open Online Course (Thai MOOC) platform. The course, titled “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Practical Implementation for the Business Sector,” equips students with critical knowledge and insights needed to integrate sustainable practices into various fields.
Through this course, students delve into the fundamentals of the SDGs, exploring their background, guiding principles, and the significance of each goal. Additionally, the course addresses pressing global challenges in environmental sustainability, social equity, economic resilience, and climate change. By examining these critical areas, students gain a deeper understanding of the complex interconnections within sustainable development and the need for holistic approaches to solving them.
The curriculum also emphasizes Thailand’s specific strategies for achieving the SDGs, such as the Transformative Change Strategy, which outlines the country’s pathways for sustainable development and alignment with international standards. Students are introduced to Thailand’s national priorities and action plans, equipping them with valuable perspectives on how sustainability frameworks can be adapted to meet local and global needs.
To evaluate their understanding and gauge their readiness to apply this knowledge, students complete a post-course assessment to measure their SDG literacy. This assessment helps ensure that WU graduates not only understand the concepts but are prepared to contribute actively to sustainable development efforts within their professions and communities.
