Walailak University Advances Sustainable Start-Ups Through Innovation and Entrepreneurial Support

Walailak University (WU) is fostering entrepreneurship and innovation within local communities by providing essential knowledge, technology, and funding opportunities for sustainable business development. This commitment aligns with sustainable development principles, ensuring that start-up enterprises are both economically viable and socially responsible.
The university’s primary institution facilitating local start-up assistance is the Walailak Business Incubation Center (WIC), with additional support from the Science and Technology Park (WUSTP). WIC plays a pivotal role in strengthening local businesses by equipping entrepreneurs with scientific knowledge, technological advancements, and essential business strategies. The center provides comprehensive support, guiding start-ups from conceptualization through research and development (R&D) and market validation to full commercialization.
In 2023, WIC, in collaboration with the Science and Technology Park, organized a specialized workshop on premium red palm oil production using microwave technology for agriculturists and local enterprise groups in Wang Wiset District, Trang Province.

Before the workshop, these entrepreneurs lacked access to critical knowledge, training, and technological resources, limiting their ability to produce high-quality red palm oil and expand their market reach. To address these challenges, the university facilitated a comprehensive training program, integrating both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice. The no-cost workshop covered:

  • Red Palm Oil Production Processes – Understanding extraction techniques and refining processes.
  • Microwave Technology for Enhanced Production – Utilizing advanced heating methods to improve oil quality and yield.
  • Quality Control and Measurement – Establishing industry standards for premium-grade red palm oil.
  • Sustainable Packaging Design – Developing attractive and eco-friendly packaging solutions.
  • Financial and Business Management – Strengthening business administration skills for long-term sustainability.
Following the training, participants reported significant improvements in the quality of their red palm oil due to the application of microwave technology. Additionally, new marketing channels were established, enabling local producers to distribute their products to restaurants, hotels, and other business operators. This initiative not only improved product quality but also created sustainable economic opportunities for the local community, representing WU’s mission to support socially and financially sustainable business practices.
