Sustainable Waste Management: WU Promoting Waste Sorting in Ban Laem Community

THA SALA, NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 23 August 2024 – Walailak University, under the leadership of Asst. Prof. Dr. Chuthamat Rattikansukha, Acting Sub Lt. Worawit Pradittakarn, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Kamon Thinsurat, in collaboration with the Center for Academic Services, organized a workshop on waste disposal aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the local people in Ban Laem community, Tha Sala, Nakhon Si Thammarat. The workshop focused on teaching participants to create bio-extracts from aquatic animal carcasses, a byproduct of local fishing, to mitigate the environmental pollution caused by these leftovers. The university also provided equipment to empower the community in further developing bio-extract production.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, Walailak University also installed solar panels in the community, supporting local efforts to reduce GHG emissions. This initiative aligns with the university’s strategic plan to assist local communities in adopting environmentally friendly practices. This workshop is part of Walailak University’s broader sustainability efforts in support of the UI GreenMetric and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key objectives included:
- Empowering local communities to play a significant role in reducing GHG emissions.
- Promoting waste sorting at the source in Ban Laem community.
- Encouraging collaboration and raising awareness among community members on sustainable environmental management and the impacts of GHG emissions on climate change.
