Total number of vehicles (cars and motorcycles with internal combustion engines and electric vehicles)
Walailak University continues to provide a convenient and eco-friendly shuttle service that operates throughout the week, facilitating transportation for students, faculty, and staff. The service follows a pre-scheduled timetable and connects key locations across campus, including dormitories, academic buildings, and popular off-campus areas. Each shuttle is equipped with comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi, allowing passengers to study or relax during their commute. Accessibility features are also included to ensure that all members of the university community can use the service.
Real-time tracking is available via a mobile application, allowing users to monitor shuttle locations and estimated arrival times. Special routes are occasionally provided during peak periods, such as student orientation and examination seasons. The university operates five electric shuttle routes, covering both on-campus and nearby off-campus areas, running daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
In the 2025 academic year, Walailak University managed a fleet of 15 university-owned cars with combustion engines. Additionally, the university recorded an average of 1,807 vehicles entering and exiting the campus daily, including 175 cars and 1,632 motorcycles. With a total university population of 17,626 people—comprising 14,492 students and 3,134 staff members—the ratio of fuel-powered vehicles to the total campus population was 0.10%, reflecting the university’s ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions.

Support for Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Usage at the University
Walailak University has implemented a policy regarding the use of public transportation and private vehicles for students and staff within the campus. All students are required to register their vehicles with the Division of Student Promotion and Development. Only electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, and electric cars are permitted for registration. In addition, the university provides a comprehensive public shuttle service that covers key areas across the campus, including dormitories, sports complexes, the hospital, the library, and Walailak Park. This policy aims to promote sustainable mobility by encouraging the use of environmentally friendly vehicles and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.

Reduction of Motorcycle Usage
The university has launched a campaign to reduce motorcycle usage among first-year students starting in the academic year 2025. To support this initiative, the university provides both internal and external shuttle bus services. Additional public transport options, such as vans and minibuses, are available for students and staff who need to travel regularly to Nakhon Si Thammarat city. This project aims to reduce motorcycle-related accidents while promoting the use of electric motorcycles. The university also offers free electric vehicle rental services, with charging stations located throughout the campus, ensuring greater convenience, faster mobility, and reduced emissions.
Promotion of Cycling and Walking
Walailak University encourages students to use bicycles and walk for short-distance travel within the campus. A “Covered Walkway” system has been constructed to connect academic buildings and facilitate safe and convenient pedestrian movement. Walking not only improves personal health but also helps reduce air pollution.
- The university promotes the use of bicycles by providing safe cycling routes for short-distance travel. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on private motor vehicles and encourage healthier lifestyles.
- Walking is further encouraged to reduce the use of vehicles, promote student and staff health, and establish a walking culture across the campus.
- To support this, the university has constructed covered pathways (“Covered Walkways”) that provide convenient access to different buildings while encouraging both walking and cycling.
Electric Shuttle Services and Zero–Emission Vehicles
Students and staff can access electric shuttle services within the campus, providing convenient and environmentally friendly transportation options.

Carpooling for Staff
The university supports carpooling for staff members, facilitated by electric shuttle buses. During major events, shuttle services allow staff to travel easily across campus locations, reducing the need for private car use.
Walailak University has continuously transitioned its fleet to electric vehicles, including minibuses, delivery vans, and patrol cars. This shift promotes clean energy usage, reduces dependence on combustion-based fuels, and supports sustainable development. The results have been tangible: in 2025, the university successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 39.07 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, directly attributed to the adoption of electric vehicles (Ref: Low Emission Support Scheme, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization – Public Organization).
This achievement reflects the university’s strong commitment to becoming a role model in environmental and clean energy management, while also improving the quality of life for students, staff, and surrounding communities. Furthermore, the initiative aligns with national policies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those targeting greenhouse gas reduction and the creation of a Low-Carbon Society in the future.
