On June 26–27, 2025, the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative (PGC-H.M.) and Walailak University, as part of the Upper Southern C-PGC Network, organized a workshop on “Carbon Footprint and Its Application Toward Carbon Neutrality in Higher Education Institutions” at the Walailak University Science and Technology Park.

The event, chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chatchai Kalyanapan on behalf of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suvit Wuttisuttimethavee, featured lectures and field training led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laksanara Khwanchum and her team. Participants learned practical methods for carbon footprint analysis, tree measurement, and greenhouse gas reduction planning.

The two-day workshop aimed to build institutional capacity for achieving carbon neutrality and advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action). It brought together 45 participants from four institutions: Walailak University, Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University, Phuket Rajabhat University, and Ranong Community College.

Fishery Waste Management for the Production of Bio-Fermented Liquid for Ban Laem Homestay Community Tourism Enterprise

On June 2, 2025, Asst. Prof. Dr. Juthamas Rattikalsukha, lecturer at the School of Multilingual and General Education, together with students from the School of Engineering, the Head of Sustainable Development and Global Excellence Promotion, and the Academic Service Center team of Walailak University, conducted a community outreach activity at Ban Laem Homestay Community Enterprise, Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat. The team provided knowledge and technology transfer on producing bio-fermented liquid fertilizer from local fishery waste such as fish scraps, shrimp shells, and squid heads—materials abundant in the area.

This activity was part of the project series “Green University Toward Ban Laem Homestay Community Enterprise,” which aims to help the community manage waste systematically while adding value to local by-products. The bio-fermented liquid can be used in agriculture to reduce chemical dependence, restore soil health, and potentially evolve into a community product.

The initiative supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals—as well as the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings categories: Waste (WS), promoting organic waste management and recycling, and Education and Research (ED), fostering community-based learning and practical knowledge application.

This activity reflects Walailak University’s role as a “University for Society,” emphasizing academic engagement for sustainable local development and inspiring community participation in environmental conservation.

“LESS for a Greener Future: Sustainable Carbon Management for Businesses” for enterprises in Tha Sala District”.

Walailak University, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laksanara Khwanchum, Deputy Director of the Academic Service Center and Project Leader, in collaboration with Mr. Songpan Chanthong, lecturer at the School of Multilingual and General Education, organized a workshop titled “LESS for a Greener Future: Business Carbon Management.” The event, part of the project “Developing Tourism Capacity Toward Low-Carbon Community Tourism in Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat,” was held on December 21, 2024, at Khao Luang Meeting Room, Cooperative Education Building, Walailak University.

The training targeted tourism-related entrepreneurs—including hotels, resorts, homestays, shops, restaurants, and cafés—in Tha Sala District who are interested in joining the Low Emission Support Scheme (LESS). The program emphasized carbon reduction through waste management, energy efficiency, and eco-friendly product or packaging design. A total of nine local businesses and over 20 participants attended the session.

Prior to the workshop, the project team conducted field surveys and questionnaires to assess environmental management knowledge, awareness, and corporate social responsibility among local entrepreneurs. The training provided participants with the knowledge needed to apply for LESS certification from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), recognizing their contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable resource use.

This initiative aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals) and supports the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings criteria in Energy and Climate Change (EC) and Education and Research (ED) categories.
