August 29, 2024 – The Center for Academic Services at Walailak University, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, participated in a panel discussion titled “The Success and Pride of the Blue Swimming Crab Bank” during the “Thailand Research Expo 2024” at Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre CentralWorld. The session featured academic experts and community network representatives sharing insights on the success and positive impact of the Blue Swimming Crab Bank project.
Achievements of the Blue Swimming Crab Bank Project
- Economic:
- Increased daily crab catch rates from 5 kilograms to 10-15 kilograms
- Created additional livelihoods, such as seafood processing, tourism integration, and online marketing
- Social:
- Promoted community-level collaboration among local fishers
- Utilized the crab bank space for fostering unity and organizing public benefit activities
- Environmental:
- Increased the population of blue swimming crabs in natural habitats
- Raised awareness about marine resource conservation
- Policy:
- Advanced a model for holistic resource management, including upstream and downstream initiatives such as crab stock enhancement, processing, and market development
Long-Term Goals
The Blue Swimming Crab Bank project not only addresses SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) but also focuses on fostering coastal community development through the blue economy and promoting a sustainable low-carbon society.
Recognition and Success
The project has been recognized with a Model Community Award and is widely acknowledged as a development model that can be adapted to other fisheries and agricultural resources nationwide.
