Redevelopment of Brownfield Land for a Sports Facility

Redevelopment of Brownfield Land for a Sports Facility

Walailak University recognizes the importance of making efficient use of existing land and infrastructure while supporting the sustainable development of its campus. Where appropriate, the University seeks to redevelop previously used or disturbed land rather than expanding development into new areas. This approach helps optimize land resources, reduce pressure on undeveloped areas, and support the continued improvement of facilities for the university community.

As part of this approach, Walailak University has redeveloped brownfield land for the development of the WU Badminton Court, transforming a previously utilized site into a functional sports facility. The project demonstrates how the reuse and redevelopment of existing land can contribute to sustainable campus development while providing students, staff, and the wider university community with improved opportunities for physical activity, recreation, and well-being.

Transforming a Brownfield Site into the WU Badminton Court

Walailak University has continued to make use of previously utilized land as part of its approach to sustainable campus development. Over the years, some areas of the University had been used for agricultural activities, including crop cultivation and other agricultural experiments. The use of chemical fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals affected some of these areas, creating a need for appropriate land rehabilitation before they could be repurposed for new facilities. Rather than leaving such land underutilized, the University has progressively transformed these areas into facilities that support education, recreation, and the well-being of the university community.

One example of this approach is the development of the WU Badminton Courts. The University’s first badminton court was developed in 2023 on land that had previously been used for fruit-tree cultivation. The agricultural area had been subject to the use of chemical substances for crop management, and the University subsequently repurposed the site for a sports facility. This redevelopment provided the University with an opportunity to give previously utilized land a new and productive function while supporting physical activity and recreation.

Building on this development, Walailak University expanded its badminton facilities in 2025 through the construction of a second WU Badminton Court. The site for the second court had previously been used as agricultural land for coconut and palm cultivation. Long-term agricultural activities and the use of chemical fertilizers affected the condition of the land. The University subsequently filled and levelled the area as part of its preparation for future development. At that time, the University had not yet determined the specific facility that would eventually be constructed on the site.

In 2025, the prepared site was transformed into the second WU Badminton Court, located adjacent to the University’s existing first court. The development allowed the University to make productive use of the previously utilized agricultural land while expanding an existing sports facility. By developing the second court next to the first, the University was able to create a more integrated area for badminton and recreational activities rather than developing an entirely new sports site elsewhere on campus.

The expanded badminton facilities provide students, staff, and members of the university community with greater access to spaces for physical activity, exercise, recreation, and sports training. The additional court also increases the capacity of the University’s existing sports infrastructure, supporting both regular recreational use and organized sporting activities.

The redevelopment of these former agricultural sites demonstrates Walailak University’s continuing efforts to transform previously utilized land into productive facilities. From fruit-tree cultivation land used for the first badminton court to coconut and palm cultivation land used for the second court, the projects illustrate how existing campus land can be rehabilitated and repurposed to meet changing community needs. Through this approach, the University not only makes more efficient use of its land resources but also creates new opportunities for health, recreation, and community well-being while supporting sustainable campus development.

The redevelopment of the former agricultural land for the second WU Badminton Court demonstrates Walailak University’s commitment to making responsible and efficient use of its existing land resources. By rehabilitating and repurposing land that had previously been used for coconut and palm cultivation, the University avoided leaving the area underutilized and instead transformed it into a productive facility that serves the university community.

The development also provides direct social and health benefits. Located alongside the existing badminton court, the second court expands the University’s capacity for sports and recreational activities, providing students, staff, and other members of the university community with greater opportunities to participate in physical exercise, recreation, and sports training. Increased access to sports facilities can contribute to healthier lifestyles, physical well-being, stress reduction, and a stronger sense of community.

From an environmental and land-management perspective, the project demonstrates the value of redeveloping previously utilized land rather than continually requiring new areas for campus expansion. The transformation of agricultural land affected by previous fertilizer use into a functional sports facility gives the site a new and productive purpose while supporting more efficient use of the University’s existing land resources.

Overall, the second WU Badminton Court represents another step in Walailak University’s continuing effort to transform previously used land into facilities that generate long-term social value. Together with the first badminton court, the project illustrates how brownfield redevelopment can support sustainable campus development while simultaneously improving recreational infrastructure, promoting health and well-being, and responding to the changing needs of the university community.
