Intervention and Activities to Support Food Access and Alleviate Staff Hunger

In 2025, Walailak University (WU) implemented staff hunger interventions to prevent or alleviate hunger among members of staff by providing free access to food, snacks, desserts, and refreshments during various university activities, including meetings, training sessions, and other staff-related events. Through the provision of food support interventions, the university aimed to improve staff access to food and reduce the need for employees to purchase meals or refreshments while participating in university activities. These initiatives represent practical efforts to support staff food accessibility and well-being within the workplace. Examples of these interventions implemented in 2025 are presented below.

Monastic Fire Offering Ceremony 2025

Walailak University organized the Monastic Fire Offering Ceremony 2025, providing staff with free access to food during the event. More than 300 staff members participated in the activity and were provided with food, desserts, and refreshments from more than 26 food stalls operated by units both within and outside the university. The provision of food free of charge served as a direct food assistance intervention for staff, helping to alleviate hunger during participation in the event while supporting staff welfare and well-being.

Songkran Festival 2025

In April 2025, Walailak University organized the Songkran Festival and provided a variety of food and desserts free of charge to approximately 600 participating staff members. The food included sticky rice with shredded pork, Thai crispy pancake rolls, coconut pancakes, stuffed Thai desserts, sticky rice parcels, desserts wrapped in nipa palm leaves, ice cream, stir-fried noodles, Foi Thong, and jelly desserts. Providing free meals and food enabled staff to access food during the event without incurring the cost of obtaining food. This intervention therefore contributed to preventing and alleviating staff hunger, while also supporting staff participation in the University’s cultural activities.

New Year Celebration Activity

On 24 December 2025, the Corporate Communications Division of Walailak University organized a New Year celebration for 2026 under the theme “Building Connections through Som Tam Making” The activity provided food and refreshments for participating staff without requiring them to bear the cost of obtaining food. The “Som Tam Making” activity also enabled staff to prepare and share food together, particularly som tam. The provision of food and refreshments represented a direct staff food support intervention, enabling staff to access food free of charge and helping to alleviate hunger during the activity. At the same time, sharing food contributed to a supportive workplace environment and strengthened social relationships among staff.

Food and Refreshments for Meetings and Training Sessions

Walailak University has a practice of providing food and refreshments free of charge to staff participating in meetings, training sessions, and other activities within the university. This intervention provides direct and practical food support, enabling staff to access food during working hours and participation in activities without having to bear the cost of obtaining food. By providing free meals and refreshments, the University helps prevent or alleviate staff hunger, reduces the financial burden associated with obtaining food during meetings and activities, and supports employee welfare and well-being in a practical and accessible manner.

Academic Service and Food Research Activities

The university has also carried out activities under the Academic Service Project and faculty research projects by organizing training sessions to transfer knowledge in food preparation. After the training, the prepared food was distributed free of charge to participants, including university staff and the general public.

Overall, these activities demonstrate Walailak University’s commitment to providing staff hunger interventions through the free provision of meals, snacks, desserts, and refreshments during university events, meetings, training sessions, and academic service activities. These interventions help prevent or alleviate hunger among staff by improving access to food at no cost, reducing food-related expenses, and supporting staff welfare and well-being. By integrating food assistance into various university activities, Walailak University promotes an inclusive and supportive working environment while demonstrating its ongoing efforts to ensure food access for staff and contribute to SDG 2: Zero Hunger.
