The Prioritisation of WU on Food Products from Local, and Sustainable Sources

Walailak University has announced the Policy on Food Preparation and Sustainable Consumption to ensure that all foods within the university are safe for the benefit of students, personnel, and visitors.

Local entrepreneurs and communities surrounding Walailak University have sustainable food sources. Moreover, it also emphasizes the importance of living together with the community by acknowledging the importance of having a good quality of life for people in the community, focusing on sustainable food purchases by prioritizing the purchase of products from local and sustainable sources.

In 2022, the university, consequently, has taken steps to give importance to products from the community as follows:

1. Local Entrepreneur Shop Zone at Chor Pradu Food Center:

The neighboring community adjacent to the university is known as the Satit Walailak Pattana Community. This community primarily relies on agriculture, which includes the cultivation of vegetables, fruits, and livestock. The university has initiated academic projects aimed at improving livelihoods across the entire supply chain. This involves activities in the upstream sector to encourage and advance safe agricultural practices, the midstream sector to facilitate the management of business groups and product processing, and the downstream sector to promote marketing and create distribution channels.

Hence, Walailak University actively backs the creation of a marketplace dedicated to community products within the Chor Praduu Food Center. This initiative aims to bolster the economic stability of the local residents in the community and promote agricultural products cultivated by local families as well as farming products procured from community members. As part of this endeavor, there are 12 stores managed by entrepreneurs residing within the Satit Walailak Pattana Community.

These community restaurants, supported and improved by WU, are designed to meet food safety standards and offer a modern dining experience, similar to conventional food establishments. The unique aspect is that these restaurant owners are not burdened with rental costs, and they are required to primarily feature products or ingredients sourced from local and trustworthy food providers, including seasonal produce, distinctive local cuisine, and more. Consequently, numerous households within the community gain access to job prospects that boost their income. Additionally, personnel, students, and the general public benefit from access to high-quality and safe food products.

2. University Souvenirs from Community Products:

The university also serves as a significant marketplace. It follows a set of guidelines for crafting diverse souvenirs meant for special occasions and festivals. These university souvenirs are sourced from safe food providers that the university endorses. This is carried out in two ways:

1. Repackaging raw materials

2. Assembling basket sets with community products tailored to specific target groups. This approach aids the local community and business groups in generating additional income while enhancing the value of their products.

Goal 2: Zero Hunger

Goal 3: Good Health and Well Being

Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth

Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
