Walailak University’s Commitment to Non-discrimination Against Transgender People

Walailak University (WU) reaffirmed its dedication to promoting inclusivity and respect for all genders by issuing its Policy on Gender Equality, Non-Discrimination, and Anti-Harassment. This policy highlights WU’s unwavering commitment to eradicating discrimination and harassment against all genders, including transgender people.

Walailak University revised its gender equality policy to further strengthen inclusivity and eliminate discrimination against women and transgender people. The revised policy stipulates that Walailak University shall:

    1. Guarantee equal access to education, employment, and opportunities for personal and professional development for women and transgender individuals.
    2. Foster a campus environment of respect, understanding, and inclusivity by providing training programs and awareness campaigns aimed at challenging gender stereotypes and biases.
    3. Safeguard individuals from harassment, bullying, and all forms of discrimination based on gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.
    4. Develop, implement, and enforce measures that acknowledge and address the specific needs and rights of women and transgender individuals, ensuring freedom from prejudice, exclusion, or unequal treatment.
    5. Collaborate with non-governmental organizations, government agencies, private sector entities, and community groups to advance initiatives that promote gender equality and uphold the rights of transgender individuals within and beyond the campus community.

In 2024, LGBT students accounted for 7.22% of the student population at Walailak University, identifying as transgender, gay, lesbian, or other gender identities. These students were represented across all schools and played an active role in driving positive changes both within the university and in the wider community. Many LGBT students have taken on leadership roles in student organizations, including the Student Council of Walailak University and the Student Administration Board, where they advocate for gender equality and other important issues that benefit the student body.

Meanwhile, LGBT staff made up 1.24% of the university’s workforce. All LGBT staff members are treated fairly and have equal opportunities in career advancement. They can hold leadership positions on the same basis as male and female staff, reflecting Walailak University’s commitment to inclusivity and equal treatment for all employees.

In 2024, Walailak University took a significant step towards creating an inclusive and safe environment for LGBT individuals by introducing the Policy on Gender Equality, Non-discrimination, and Anti-harassment. This policy aims to protect LGBT people from any form of discrimination and harassment, promoting a culture of respect and equality within the university community.

In 2024, Walailak University reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity by sending a delegation of LGBT students to participate in the Transgender Nakhon Si Thammarat University Competition 2023, which was held in 2024. This initiative was supported by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urai Jaraeprapal, Vice President of Walailak University, along with other senior executives, reflecting the university’s ongoing recognition and advocacy for LGBT rights. The event served as a significant platform for celebrating the achievements and contributions of transgender individuals in higher education and society. By supporting such initiatives, Walailak University continues to foster an inclusive academic environment where students of all gender identities feel valued and empowered.

Another longstanding initiative promoting gender diversity is the Miss Lady Boy Competition, a vibrant tradition that has been an integral part of university life for years. The competition provides a platform for transgender students and staff to showcase their talents, creativity, and confidence. More than just a beauty pageant, the event symbolizes Walailak University’s embrace of diversity and its dedication to creating a supportive and inclusive campus culture.

The 2024 Miss Lady Boy Competition was held at Thai Buri Hall, drawing a large and enthusiastic audience, including Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, as well as vice presidents, faculty members, staff, students, and members of the public. The event was a resounding success, not only celebrating gender diversity but also highlighting the university’s unwavering commitment to fostering a campus environment where transgender individuals can express their identity freely and without fear of discrimination. Prior to the competition held at Thai Buri Hall, all schools at the university organized their own Miss Lady Boy competition to find a representative from each school and then send the representatives to the final round at the hall. This implementation aims to ensure that all trans women at WU have equal access to the competition. The festive atmosphere of the competition encouraged self-expression and empowerment, reinforcing Walailak University’s reputation as a progressive institution that values inclusivity.

In addition, during the WU Freshy Award 2024 event, Walailak University organized a special competition for LGBT students titled “WU Pride Charisma” to celebrate diversity and inclusion on campus. The event aimed to promote visibility and recognition of the LGBT community within the university, fostering an environment of equality and respect. Serving as a symbolic counterpart to traditional male and female competitions, “WU Pride Charisma” empowered LGBT students by affirming their identity and ensuring that everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, has a rightful place and voice at Walailak University.

These policies support transgender and gender-diverse individuals in areas such as access to education, healthcare, and student services. By integrating inclusivity into its governance and student activities, the university ensures that LGBT individuals receive the respect, affirmation, and recognition they deserve.

Through these ongoing efforts, Walailak University provides LGBT students—especially transgender individuals—with greater visibility, affirmation, and opportunities for self-expression. These initiatives not only empower students but also foster a deep sense of belonging and pride, strengthening the university’s position as an advocate for diversity and inclusion in higher education.

This policy demonstrates the university’s commitment to social justice and equity, supporting students in expressing their authentic selves.

By enabling individuals to dress in alignment with their gender identities, Walailak University fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment.
