Educational Outreach Activities for communities: Overfishing management

Sustainability and Stewardship In 2023, Walailak University continued to collaborate with the Fisheries Office of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, the Association of Thai Fisherfolk Federation, the National Research Council of Thailand, and the Agricultural Research Development Agency (Public Organization) to conduct educational outreach activities at both local and national levels. These efforts aimed to raise awareness about overfishing, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and harmful fishing practices affecting blue swimming crabs. The activities targeted fishermen, local and national government officials, youth, NGOs, and the general public in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani, fostering a broad understanding of sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation. Outreach and Engagement Walailak University is committed to the conservation and sustainable utilization of aquatic resources, providing direct support through actions in maintaining ecosystems in rivers, lakes and seas and covering efforts to protect oceans, rivers, and marine resources. Through collaborations with local communities, government agencies, private sectors, and non-profit organizations, the university organizes and supports various events aimed promote conservation and sustainable utilization of oceans, fresh water and marine resources. The events such as building artificial fish habitats, repairing living weirs, and releasing juvenile blue crabs into the sea not only strengthen local ecosystems but also provide lasting benefits to communities. Sustainability and Stewardship Walailak University is located near the marine coastal ecosystem that is the Gulf of Thailand and surrounded by local fishing communities. In order to illustrate being a good stewardship university, WU sets strategies and plans to provide educational programs for the local fishing communities and those communities living near the marine coastal ecosystems on the sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism and the sustainable utilization of marine resources.
